The scripture Lesson for this Sunday is from Galatians 5:1, 13-25
1 For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
13 For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. 14 For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 15 If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another.
16 Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit.
Annual Conference Report
Dear Church,
This year’s Annual Conference was the most dynamic I have ever attended. Our theme was Rebuild My Church. Events beginning with the Covid Pandemic, the Disaffiliation of some of our churches and Hurricane Helene have caused us to look at who we are and to take some steps toward honoring more closely the connectional importance of our United Methodist Church. Our Conference vision statement was Love Boldly, Serve Joyfully and Lead Courageously.
Our sermons and workshops all spoke to this vision statement and showed that we are at our strongest and best when we work together to learn, know and practice God’s Will for us. In keeping with the theme and the vision statement of the Conference our speakers shared with the us that we are indeed called to do God’s Will. We are to heal wounds, speak the truth, build bridges, practice forgiveness, embody hope and most importantly reflect the love and character of Jesus himself. To show that we are “practicing what was preached” the designated offerings were to provide funding for the repair of Historically Black churches and to have a covenant relationship with the Ukraine/Moldova Provisional Annual Conference. Dynamic Bishops from other conferences delivered heartfelt and passionate sermons thanking and challenging us to continue deepening our faith by our outward actions in God’s World.
Meeting old friends, former pastors and making new friends was also a very real part of the experience. Having the opportunity to spend time with Bill and Lisa was of course meaningful and lots of fun! Thank you for the privilege of being your delegate to the 2026 Western North Carolina Annual Conference.
Gratefully,
Judy Toney

The FUMC Newsletter
This page on the church website is the permanent home of the newsletter. Text-to-speech apps will work on this page. Older newsletters are archived, and the current newsletter will always be at this address. This mobile-friendly format is much more accessible and allows for immediate updates to information. Feel free to check by as often as you like. The goal is for major updates to happen on schedule by Wednesday, and a print edition will still be sent via US Mail to those who request it. Please let the church office know if you no longer wish to receive the printed copy.
May the Peace of the Lord, and His Blessings be with you all, and we hope to see you on Sunday!
